The Wallsend community is celebrating the completion of important upgrades to Wallsend Park, with a brand-new irrigation system now installed thanks to a $285,000 commitment secured by Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon MP.

The new irrigation system will significantly improve the quality and resilience of the park’s playing fields, supporting the many local sporting clubs who call Wallsend Park home, including cricket, rugby league, and soccer teams.

By providing more consistent turf coverage and better drainage, the upgrade will make the grounds safer, more reliable, and easier to maintain throughout the year. It will also reduce water use and ensure the park remains green and playable even during dry conditions.

The investment is part of the Albanese Labor Government commitment to supporting grassroots sport and ensuring Newcastle communities have access to quality open spaces.

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon:

“Wallsend Park is one of Newcastle’s busiest community sports grounds, and I am thrilled to see these irrigation upgrades completed.

“This $285,000 investment is all about supporting local sport, making sure our clubs have safe, high-quality facilities and our players have a reliable surface to train and compete on.

“These improvements will benefit hundreds of players and families every week and help keep Wallsend Park in top shape for years to come.”

Quotes attributable to Wallsend Cricket Club President Nathan Holloway:

“The project has been extremely well received and is already proving to be a gamechanger for our club.

“It has dramatically reduced the time and effort required by our wicket curators – what once took an hour can now be completed in just seven minutes.

“We are incredibly grateful to Sharon Claydon MP and the City of Newcastle for their support and assistance in bringing this project to life.”
