Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon MP is pushing for Throsby Creek to receive funding for environmental works under a future Shorten Labor Government.Ms Claydon joined State Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp, who also chairs the Throsby Government Agency Group, to discuss the projects potential with the Federal Shadow Minister for Environment and Water Tony Burke MP while he visited Newcastle today. Mr Burke said Labor had committed $200 million to bring urban waterways and habitat corridors back to health. Through the Urban Rivers and Waterways Program, a Shorten Labor Government will restore urban rivers across the country to their natural beauty. Labors investment will unlock grant funding for projects to clean up our rivers including revegetation, tree planting, waste capture and naturalisation projects, Mr Burke said. Ms Claydon said that while the rejuvenation of Throsby Creek had come a long way, there was still much work to be done to make it healthier and protect it for future generations. There are many ways that a Shorten Labor Government investment could make a difference to the health of Throsby Creek, its tributaries and our community. Mr Crakanthorp said there were a number of priority projects that a Federal Labor Government could support, including river bank naturalisation and litter traps. Throsby Creek and its feeder waterways cover virtually the whole city. Pollutants from across the catchment quickly flow to the harbour and out to sea. Id particularly like to see an investment in gross pollutant and litter traps across the catchment to stem the spread of damaging plastics into our harbour and the ocean, Mr Crakanthorp said.
