Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon is welcoming news from Australia Post that parcel lockers have now been installed at Wallsend Post Office.
Following several complaints about long wait times and some residents being turned away due to capacity constraints at Wallsend Post Office, Ms Claydon took the community’s fight to the floor of Parliament in Canberra.
In two speeches to the Parliament, Ms Claydon highlighted the concerning number of reports received, and called on Australia Post to urgently address them.
Following this, Australia Post committed to employing an additional staff member and installing a bank of parcel lockers at Wallsend Village Shopping Centre, to provide customers with an additional way to collect parcels.
Those lockers have now been installed and are open and accessible for the community to securely pick up or send parcels at any time of the day or night.
Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon:
“This is a big win for the Wallsend community, and I want to thank residents for raising this issue with me.
“Wallsend Post Office serves a large region, including the rapidly growing suburbs of Maryland, Fletcher and Minmi, who deserve access to this essential service.
“This lack of resourcing caused considerable stress for people in my community.
“I will be keeping a close eye out to see how these new lockers impact customer wait times.”
