Media Release - Newcastle Stronger Communities Grants

08 June 2015

6 August 2015 The 2015 Newcastle Stronger Communities Grants initiative was launched in Newcastle today, with Sharon Claydon encouraging local community groups to apply for up to $20,000 in funding for small capital projects. The program provides funding of up to $150,000 for each federal electorate to support projects which improve local community participation. Grants of between $5,000 and $20,000 will be available for projects with matched contributions, in-cash or in-kind, on at least a dollar for dollar basis. We all know that it can be difficult for community-based not-for-profit organisations to raise funds for projects. These grants are a great way to get small projects which improve community participation and contribute to the vibrancy and viability of our local community over the line. Whether its an upgrade to existing facilities, new seating or a canteen at a sports ground, or a fit-out of a community centre, theres a wide range of projects that are eligible under this program. I encourage all eligible groups to lodge an application for projects that will help build a strong and healthy community. Local community based not-for-profit organisations and local governing bodies are eligible to apply for funding. Examples of projects that may be eligible include the fit-out of community centres; sporting facility upgrades; community arts projects; or the purchase of equipment for local SES or Rural Fire Services. Applications will be assessed by a committee of Novocastrians with strong connections to the community. There will also be an opportunity for applicants to pitch their project idea to the community and gain support for their project through online voting. Applications for the 2015 Newcastle Stronger Communities Grants are now open and close on 4 September. Applications can be lodged online via the below address, with more information including full eligibility details and timelines for applying and assessment available at http://www.sharonclaydon.com/newcastle_stronger_communities_grants
