The Federal Government will fund 19 more working women to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the University of Newcastle as part of its commitment to support women build STEM careers. Sharon Claydon MP said the University of Newcastle would receive $479,000 after the Federal Government approved the second round of funding for the Women in STEM Cadetships and Advanced Apprenticeships Program. The latest Women in STEM program funding will create an extra 267 university places across Australia, Sharon Claydon MP said. I want to congratulate the University of Newcastle for successfully applying for Women in STEM program funding so that it can provide 19 more places for women in Newcastle. The Governments grant funding helps eligible higher education providers develop and deliver pre-bachelor higher education courses to support women to study part time while continuing their careers. This is an innovative program, involving strong collaborations with industry, to promote equity opportunity outcomes for women who are persistently under-represented in STEM, Sharon Claydon MP said. The program supports the Governments aim to increase the Australian STEM-skilled workforce by also assisting industry partners to upskill their workers with job-relevant skills. This is especially important as Newcastle becomes a New Energy Superpower. In addition to funding for higher education providers, the program supports students participation in the program by providing grants of up to $5,000 for employers to encourage flexible working arrangements and contribute towards the cost of studies.
