Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon MP has welcomed the announcement that Newcastle theatre company, Curious Legends will receive $30,000 funding through the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).While this grant for our community is welcome, it is disappointing to see another round of rorts from the Morrison-Joyce Government with almost 90% of BBRF funding going to Coalition-held or marginal seats. Out of $300 million of funding available, Coalition-held and marginal seats received around $270 million. These rorts mean that shovel-ready projects like the $10 million Newcastle Art Gallery expansion and the $8.5 million revitalisation of the Victoria Theatre miss out on the funding they need. While our community received $30,000, some Coalition-held electorates received up to $18.5m in funding. Its a pity the Morrison-Joyce Government has ignored these job-creating, lasting infrastructure projects in Newcastle. After Sports Rorts which saw Newcastle Olympic Football Club duded of their funding, Car Park Rorts and Safer Communities Rorts, we now have another round of Regional Rorts. This is why the Morrison-Joyce Government wont introduce an independent National Integrity Commission, it would get in the way of rorts like this. Even before these latest revelations, the Australian National Audit Office had already announced they were auditing this billion-dollar program. This came after previous rounds of the BBRF saw astonishing ministerial intervention and up to 94% of funding go to Coalition held and targeted seats. Only an Albanese Labor Government can be trusted to legislate a real National Integrity Commission, end the Morrison-Joyce Government's addiction to rorts and provide the funding our community needs.
